Design sketchbook: Battery gun

General / 09 October 2024

This year I decided to learn how to draw. As a little "capstone project" I designed this battery pistol entirely in 2d, as opposed to entirely in 3d, as my typical process has been. I used 3d blockouts for maquettes, but these blockouts were cut straight from the 2d drawings, like patterns in a garment design. The 2d always came first.

Some casual visual tips for the boys.

These last two were in the previous post, I'm just including them here to have it all in one place:

You can find me on Twitter to see good content like this constantly, if you want.

Some munitions sketches I did while learning Cycles in late September

speed designs

Made in a day each as a sort of personal benchmark. I would say these are something like 3d sketches that would be intermediate points between basic shape thumbnailing, which is a matter of hours, and polished final design, which would be another day or two of revision, reflection, and detailing.

Prop exercises

General / 21 July 2020

These are some assets I did in the last few weeks as brief reps in between larger projects. Each one took about a day, or a night and a morning. Since they aren't too complex I dunno if they warrant full posts of their own so I figured I'd group them in a post here.

First one, a Russian RGD-5 grenade.

Texture could go a lot harder on this one but it did help shake some rust out. I moved on in the interest of progression. Sometimes you just ship it  :)

Next an awl which was an excuse to cook some wood in Painter.

Also made a gif showing the layers building the wood, may be of interest. Unfortunately, because of the compression, a few steps are hard to make out here. I got a lot of good feedback on this gif, so I will probably try to do more of this, in higher quality, showing how to layer up different materials.

And finally a capped camera lens. This is an actual thing in my room, similar to the hammer I made a while ago. I wanted to try to get it as close as possible to reality. Having the actual object on hand is always very enlightening for self-critique, especially for texturing.

That's it for now.

Some actual portfolio stuff coming very soon...
